Our Goals

Tisch McDanielPresident's Message

Dear SHRM-Memphis Members,

“YOU make SHRM-Memphis what it is today”. That’s right. You, the member, make this chapter what it is with your passion, drive, overwhelming excitement, true dedication and commitment to your chapter and the HR profession.

In January your board worked on the 2016 Strategic Plan for the chapter, which included the creation of a new mission and vision statement that is a true testament to that which we are, what we do, and what we believe in. Our new Mission Statement is: SHRM-Memphis is the resource for professional development through engagement, education, and empowerment of HR professionals to be effective business partners throughout the Mid-South. And our new Vision Statement is: To become an engaged HR organization that is recognized as a strategic partner for the Mid-South business community.

SHRM-Memphis’ 2016 Strategic Plan is the See Declare Commit Process. See is the vision and strategy; where we need to go. Declare is the act of stepping out and saying this is the way we are going. Commit is the visible part of declaration; what you do in support of the new direction. Enroll is to begin to help others see what is changing. Engage is actively involving others in the planning and the journey. Execute is checking the status of the implementation plan and taking action if necessary.

2016 will be the beginning of two-year terms for half of the board, including the Presidency. This is something you asked for to ensure better, consistent leadership. This year you voted on two new voting board positions to align us more closely with our mission and vision; these two positions are the Vice President of Workforce Development, held by Pat Myers, and the Vice President of Diversity & Inclusion, held by James Price. Pat is busy working with her new team and Jim is busy working on the Diversity & Inclusion event for you in October.

Your VP of Programs, John Wallace and chair Dhane Marques, are busy lining up speakers for the rest of the year. One of the mainstream topics on the agenda is ‘ACTIVE SHOOTER IN THE WORKPLACE: IS YOUR COMPANY PREPARED?’ for the April member meeting. Gives me the chills typing it just now! We, as HR, need to address the sensitive, difficult topics and learn what we can do and how to help. Is your business interested in sponsoring a SHRM-Memphis member meeting? Please contact Nancye Claxton or Rebecca Plough with Vendor Relations.

Your Vice President of Membership, Nicole Veternik, is working with her team and in collaboration with Mary Pennington’s Ambassadors team, to bring a new look to the membership activities. Stay tuned for the unveiling of a brand, motto, slogan and a schedule of new and exciting ways to network with other members. Oh, and don’t forget, each year when you renew your National SHRM membership, please make sure that you re-affiliate your membership with SHRM-Memphis, your local chapter. This affiliation brings revenue to your chapter so that we may continue bringing the top-notch speakers for your monthly training programs. To affiliate, go to the SHRM-Memphis home page ( ) and click on the box that says “Affiliate with SHRM-Memphis”.

Not only does 2016 bring new changes to SHRM-Memphis, it is also the year that we host the Tennessee State Conference. The theme, Lead, Follow, Or Get Out of the Way, is also the theme for my next two years as your President of SHRM-Memphis. All members are encouraged to get involved and volunteer with the 2016 State Conference by contacting Verlinda Henning, President-Elect of SHRM-Memphis. If you are interested in serving on a State Conference committee you can contact Cindy Phelan, State Conference Chair, or Antoinette Wiseman, State Conference Co-Chair. The State Conference will be held at the Memphis Cook Convention Center and our Social will be held at the Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid. A lot of activities are going on right now in preparation for this outstanding event!

This year our 2nd Annual HR Awards will be the night before state conference begins. This is very exciting to be able to tie our HR Awards program with the activities of the state conference. The Award ceremony will be at the Cook Convention Center as well. Stay tuned for the marketing of the program – it will be here before you know it.

Reach out to the board if you have any questions – we are here to serve you.

Be safe, be well, be happy and be HR!
